Maintaining Franconian cultural heritage

The cards were played until shortly before midnight last Friday. Exactly 104 enthusiastic players competed for top prizes at the 2nd Günter Lang Memorial Sheepshead Tournament at MEKRA Lang in Ergersheim. The main prize was a television worth 1000 euros. The 2nd place winner received a gas barbecue worth around 600 euros. Both prizes were provided by the Hartmann company. It was exciting for the third place winner. A draw had to be made, as two cart drivers ended up with the same number of points. The winner of the draw went home with a voucher for a suckling pig dinner for 15 people, provided by Genusswerk Bad Windsheim. But all the other participants were also able to win great prizes.

The event started at 7 pm with a welcome from Susanne Lang. Once the rules of the game had been explained to all participants and the last ambiguities regarding the counting method had been cleared up, it was time to get started. A total of 1664 games of Schafkopf were played over the course of the tournament at 26 tables with four players each. A considerable number, as quite a few of the players were left with a bit of a headache after intensive games.

Before the tournament and during the breaks, the participants were able to help themselves to a buffet. The kart players were able to choose from a variety of Franconian delicacies. All on a donation basis. MEKRA Lang doubled all the tournament proceeds. As a result, 2500 euros went to the Ansbach women's shelter.

All in all, it was a successful, exciting and entertaining second Günter Lang Memorial Schafkopf Tournament, which will certainly be held again next year.
